Theresa May accuses striking unions of having 'contempt' for ordinary people

Theresa May today accused striking unions of having “contempt” for ordinary people, and wouldn’t rule out introducing more legal crackdowns on workers’ rights to strike.
It comes amid a string of walkouts by rail, Post Office and British Airways staff over the festive period.

And this morning workers at the Weetabix factories in Corby and Kettering announced a series of 24 hour strikes in the new year in a row over shift patterns.
“What we’re seeing here is people’s lives being disrupted in a completely unacceptable manner,” a Downing Street spokesperson said today.

“What the government wants is for all parties to get back around the negotiating table, settle their disputes and bring an end to the misery that hundreds of thousands of people are suffering.

“In terms of legislation, we have introduced the Trade Union Act and we’ll keep that process under review and see how it works. But nothing will be ruled out.”
Asked if the Prime Minister thought the strikes were politically motivated and coordinated, her spokesperson said it was “for the unions to explain their motivations.”

But he added: “If these strikes share one thing in common, it’s a shared contempt for ordinary people who are just trying to go about their daily lives.”
